“Maple Shade,” an adaptation from the new memoir (which I am finishing up, damn it!), is just up on the n+1 website as part of their City by City feature. It’s a meditation on my hometown of Maple Shade, NJ. Read it here.
A photo by my old friend and fellow Shader Thomas V. Hartmann (I call him Tom, but that’s me) accompanies the feature. There’a another one above as well.
I love reflections on small towns that you hate as a kid. Great stuff, looking forward to more!
Hey thanks! Nice to see you here at DN.com! Welcome home to the US, right?
yep! Got back in November and it’s been a blast ever since.
I spent most of my childhood and all of my teens and early twenties in The Shade. Been living in West LA for the last six years. Thanks for writing this bittersweet meditation that perfectly expressed how I feel about my beloved / hated hometown.
Thanks so much, Rama. I appreciate your writing here on my site!
