Jessica Anthony is author of the novel The Convalescent, winner of the first McSweeney’s Amanda Davis Highwire Fiction Award, and called a “compulsively readable debut novel” in a starred Publishers Weekly and a Barnes & Noble “Discover Great New Writers” pick.
Peter Conners is author of the memoir Growing Up Dead: The Hallucinated Confessions of a Teenage Deadhead. Set against the backdrop of the American landscape of the late ’80s to mid-’90s, it has been called “insightful and entertaining” (Kirkus) and “earnest and often hilarious” (Publishers Weekly).

Frequency North is proud to welcome back Darcey Steinke, who will also visit freshmen in the Exploratory Program in the afternoon.
Darcey Steinke’s most recent book is Easter Everywhere: A Memoir, which recounts her lifelong struggle to find religion, from her early life as daughter of a Lutheran minister and a former Miss Albany. Entertainment Weekly called the book “unflinchingly recounts years of disillusionment in her stumble back toward faith.” Steinke is also the author of four critically acclaimed novels, most recently Milk.

Capital Lit: CLMP’s First-Ever Albany Lit Mag & Small Press Fair

Attention Albany Lit Lovers! Start 2010 off right with all the literary magazines and books you can carry off from CAPITAL LIT, CLMP’s first-ever Albany Lit Mag & Small Press Fair. Hundreds of regional and national independent literary publishers will converge to sell their journals for only $2 an issue and books for $4 each.
Many publishers will attend in person to meet Albany’s eager readers, so don’t miss this opportunity to discover literature you are unlikely to find in a single store, and meet the publishers and editors who do the real work of keeping American Literature vibrant and vital.
The all-day festival also includes a panel discussion on publishing, readings by some of the region’s most notable authors, capped off by the Albany debut of Karaoke + Poetry = Fun!

Jericho Brown and Ernest Hilbert

Jericho Brown‘s first book, Please, is a collection of poetry largely centered around and inspired by the music of such varied artists as Marvin Gaye, Pink Floyd, Diana Ross. Mark Doty calls it a “stunning debut.” He is a recipient of a Bunting Fellowship from Harvard University
Ernest Hilbert is the editor of the Contemporary Poetry Review and host of the popular blog and video show E-verse Radio. His first collection, Sixty Sonnets, name-checks everything from Zippos to Star Wars figures to Plato and Thomas Eakins. Franz Wright calls it a “touching and intelligent book.”

Writebloody Publishing Poetry Showcase with Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, Derrick Brown, and “Mighty” Mike McGee

Join us for a showcase of Writebloody, whose incendiary writers, DIY ethos, and books designed by painters, photographers and rock album designers led Filter Magazine to describe it as “quickly becoming the number one indie press on the market.”
Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz is author of the nonfiction book Words in Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam as well as five books of poetry, most recently Everything is Everything. She is founder of the NYC-Urbana slam team.
Founder and publisher of Writebloody, Derrick Brown, a former paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, gondolier, magician, and fired weatherman, has performed internationally and opened for bands Cold War Kids, The White Stripes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. His moving show incorporates spoken word, minimalist music, and sound effects.
“Mighty” Mike McGee is spoken word artist/writer/performer/speaker/slam poet/ comic who has performed all over North America. Winner of Individual World Poetry Slam and National Poetry Slam Individual Grand Championships. his “stand-up poetry” has been written about in Writer’s Digest, and featured on NPR, HBO and CBC.
