Here’s an image from The College of Saint Rose Archives and Special Collections at The Neil Hellman Library. It’s called, appropriately enough, “Nuns marching through rainstorm.” Taken in the 1958 dedication of the Lima Hall dormitory. “Nuns march, undaunted by a thunderstorm, to the Lima Hall dormitory groundbreaking,” the description reads. So close to a March of the Penguins reference, and yet so far. Anyway, it’s haunting, isn’t it?
And here is a detail from “Nuns take cover during rainstorm.” Maria Kessler McShane, the Special Collections librarian at Saint Rose, entioned once when visiting my class that there’s pictures of “nuns on horseback” in the archives. There’s no digitized pictures yet on display, but when there are, I plan on printing large posters of them.
I just think nuns on horseback is a funny idea. I just do.
By the way, by posting two pictures of nuns, I have ensured the number of hits for this website will increase by at least 25%. When I look for search terms that lead to this site, the words “nun” or “nuns” always appear in the top 10, alongside “Freddie Mercury mustache” and “tennis star Daniel Nestor.” So if you have arrived at this web page looking for pictures of nuns, I hope you’re happy now. Freaks.
